Ok, as I have previously stated, I do not know many Catholics and I am wondering about how serious Catholics take him.

If he really is infallible?

The reason is that I just heard he condemned existentialism in the 1950. It made me quite upset.

Only by Papal decree is he suppose to be infallible. Its not just anything that they say... But yeah he is ment to be the leader of the Catholic Church and all that crap and is taken very seriously by all good Catholic... I think the last time any Pope spoke ex cathedra and thus infallibly was in like the 50's and all about Mary (the mother of Jesus)... Ill look it up...

here you go:

For all such infallible teachings, the Holy Spirit also works through the body of the Church to ensure that the teaching will be received by all Catholics.

This doctrine was defined dogmatically in the First Vatican Council of 1870. According to Catholic theology, there are several concepts important to the understanding of infallible, divine revelation: Sacred Scripture, Sacred Tradition, and the Sacred Magisterium. The infallible teachings of the pope are part of the Sacred Magisterium, which also consists of ecumenical councils and the "ordinary and universal magisterium". In Catholic theology, papal infallibility is one of the channels of the infallibility of the Church. The infallible teachings of the pope must be based on, or at least not contradict, Sacred Tradition or Sacred Scripture. Papal infallibility does not signify that the pope is impeccable, i.e., that he is specially exempt from liability to sin.

According to The Complete Idiot's Guide to Understanding Catholicism: "In reality, the pope seldom uses his power of infallibility......rather than being some mystical power of the pope, infallibility means the church allows the office of the pope to be the ruling agent in deciding what will be accepted as formal beliefs in the church."[2] Since the 1870 solemn declaration of Papal Infallibility by Vatican I, this power has been used only once: in 1950 when Pius XII defined the Assumption of Mary as being an article of faith for Roman Catholics.

There you are. That is just about what I thought...

So is your mother!

But why would 'a mouthpiece for the soviet union' have anything to do with existentialism?

And why should the pope care?

Should we care if he cared in the 1950s?

And is that this pope or the 1950s pope?

I dont believe that only individuals can give sense and meaning to the world; there exist objective values and concepts that exist outside of our influence, and that yet, people organize their lives around, individualy or collectively. And this, existencialism reject. I think.

To claim there is objective meaning to the world and an objective ethic is simply ... absurd. At least that we should know what it is.

Who cares if the pope declared existentiallism nonsense?

I could still, if I wanted, be a devout catholic and existentialist.

I would just say that the pope of the 1950s didn't really exist and was just a part of humanity's collective imagination and therefore his infallibility is tempered by his non-existence.

Yup... I'm crazy

Indeed. It is not the Pope as a person, but his office that is considered infallible.

According to Catholic law, you're allowed to believe anything you want, so long as you can find one Catholic bishop you agrees with you. So, in practice, only Bishops and above are allowed to disagree with a pope.
