With Russian forces pushing even deeper into Georgia, and chances for a ceasefire looking slimmer by the hour, the US and other nations have warned Russia of its military aggression. It's obvious that no resolutions will come out of the UN as Russia holds veto power. The question then is how soon and to what extent the US, EU, and NATO will step into this conflict. Opinions?

The West doesn't really have much to gain in actively fighting the Russians over Georgia. That would just be insane. I would say they should just not to lose credibility with all pro-Western goverments in ex-USSR countires, but nobody wants to go into war with Russia. History shows that those who do -- lose.

Georgian independence is crucial to European energy security, at least for the moment. The only other pipelines are controlled by Russia, and they've shown themselves to be quite willing to use energy as a weapon.

I doubt the situation will worsen. Georgia is damn near incapable of escalating the situation and at this point even Saakashvili must understand that western aid will not arrive. Russia on the other hand has achieved their goals. First the autonomy of South Ossetia and Abkhazia from Georgia has been guaranteed. Second Georgia has been thoroughly punished for displeasing Moscow. Third NATO has been effectively warned that Russia is willing to use force to maintain its sphere of influence.

This is basically Russia enforcing its version of the Munroe Doctrine and preparing to show the west that Kosovo's independence was a mistake. The west won't do anything about it, nor should we. We all know that quite frankly Georgia is not worth a nuclear confrontation. Further expansion of NATO will only break the Alliance apart with unstable regimes trying to use membership as a free pass to get away with things that original members would never try or accept.

Now I think that the only way it would spread is if the Russians kill some American military preforming "humanitarian" relief, whether by accident or on purpose.
