What?!

This is Really upsetting. I've played Starcraft with my dad and my buddy Charlie for ten years now and before that we played Warcraft II. Now it's time for Starcraft II. What the Hell?

can someone go and complain on battle.net please? can't get my login to work.

Judging by how big the StarCraft fanbase is and how many people play it on LAN, I suspect that if Blizzard doesn't change this some savvy mod programmers will.

lame. im sure its to increased bnet traffic, as well as to make sure that if anyone wants to do multiplayer, they gotta buy the game.

regardless, as funderbunk mentioned, someone will hack it and mod it so that you can LAN play. we'll see in due time.

Yeah, someone will probably hack and the mod the game but its still pretty sad. LAN is what made Starcraft so popular, why remove it?

After what happened to Spore, you would think they'd know better than this.

Seems like DRM is getting a lot worse these days >_<

Here is an online petition:

This is a pretty unexpected move by Blizzard. Lan parties were probably half the fun of their games in the first place.

It is king of suspicious to, do they have any reason for doing this other than to raise discussion?

That's too bad...

Look at it from a developer perspective... Battle.net and LAN are two entirely different beings. Coding for one is not the same as coding for the other. Having to do both adds a lot of complication to the codebase and will significantly increase the amount of testing required. Blizzard likely has a strong framework for Battle.net as a result of Warcraft III and WoW that they can use and trust, minimizing testing required, getting the game into your hands even faster.

With legit copies of Starcraft II, you could easily logon to Battle.net and have private games with only your friends, essentially accomplishing exactly what LAN play would do. I'm not sure if anyone has LANs anymore that don't have some sort of broadband access (if they do, they should punch themselves in the face).

The only major missing piece is spawning the games... not sure how often that is done anymore though. I don't want to sit and spawn huge copies of games anymore just to play online.

Forcing me and my friends to give up LAN means no alcohol, no pausing the game to go have dinner and discuss what needs to be done next, none of that stuff. We can't all use Battle.net because we've only got the one broadband connection. Hell battle.net gets mad at my comps for running two copies of Diablo II at the same time.

Their fears about Piracy can suck my cock. Fifty dollars should buy you a game and the ability to play it with a friend. Hell, these guys are still selling copies of Diablo II at Gamespot. Seems every kid and adult in Ossining New York must have a copy by now but whatever!

Get a router and turn that one connection into many connections. Problem solved.

The internet was the worst thing to happen to LAN parties anyway.

On a big LAN party you'll usually find at least 40% playing some MMO instead.

I feel if they did this that they would be idiots for doing that. The first time i played starcraft was this winter and i played it over a lan game. If they decide to take out that feture then they are making a bad career move for the game.payday advance loans

95764 signatures so far on the petition... thats alot.. hopefully Blizz recognizes their mistake and adds LAN.

Heres a quote from one of the signers: "starcraft without lan is like the moon without the sun. :/" (Signer 26257)

Yep.. sounds about right.

A game without a fixed release date and with an unlimited budget, delayed.

Truly this is the Blizzard we know and love.

Not exactly, you still experience significantly more lag. You're also blocking the ability of people to play the game within a household. It also introduces lag to players who would otherwise experience none in a lan situation. So it has major disadvantages.

Of course putting less and less features into a game is clearly less coding for any developer, that's pretty much a captain obvious statement. If they didn't put in the zerg and protoss it'd be easier. If they reused the old graphics engine, it'd be easier. It'd also make the game shittier
