This article is from last Friday. Since then, the death toll in Ukraine has doubled to 67 and climbing. Nice...

"The virus is spreading across Eastern Europe"

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/11/01/w...=ukraine&st=cse

If it gets serious, I'll just take the family up to some cabin in the mountains and wait it out, with just some firewood and canned soup.

And I'll shoot any visitors!!!!!!!

Aren't you still in school DJ? Up here at Bates college once you get the swine you are immediately quarantined and sent home. We've had, supposedly, hundreds of cases because it spreads so fast. It's clearly flu-light, I mean I thought I was going to fuckin die when I got a real flu, but the problem with swine is that you WILL get it if you're in an area that's got it. And the flu sucks.

dying from the flu however, lolz. except for young children that sucks, kill intruders on site so and so. and take pix of you wielding a shotgun i wanna see em.

I read somewhere that the normal strain of influenza has killed more people this year than the swine strain. Also, it can kill teens and young adults. My friend's mother is a PICC specialist and she's seen a few people in their 20's die. Still, it's nothing worth getting frightened over. I'm sure it's more likely I'll be mugged or hit by a drunk driver than contracting swine flu.

the fact it killed 67 people in a week, just across the border isn't scary?

..... Yet I still drive 40minutes everyday.

I'm not about to freak out because the news is fear mongering.

riiiiight...

But these problems that we've listed are problems that we understand and gauge on a day to day basis. We all know that driving can be dangerous or that we could contract the flu. It's not like this is a particularly bad year for driving or a particularly bad year for the regular flu, but it is a bad year for a highly infectious version of a weak flu. I'm not worried about DYING, I won't, I'm young and invincible, but I do think I'll get it which sucks. Parents should be worried because if they're as likely to get it as I am, then they will give it to their children who will be in serious trouble.

I'd be worried say, if a person or two on my campus died. Then I'd be flippin' out. I just know that having the flu Sucks, it's going to cost me a week of work that I don't have. It's LIKELY that I will get swine in some form or another. It's actually UNLIKELY I'll get the regular flu. It's more likely that I'll get into a car accident, but that's simply a reality of living in a society with vehicles, I'm not going to whine about that. I'm more likely to die from the flu or a car accident since they're more serious, but I'm more likely to miss a week of work because of swine. And I can't do that.

On a related note, we should have all invested in Purell when this whole thing started. What were we thinking?

I think my daughter had this (still has it)... missed three days of school (would have been more if not for the weekend), hasn't hardly ate in a week, and is finally getting over an aweful cough over a week since it started.

Hit her school really, really hard. About 20 people in her class, over half were out sick last week because of it.

Now I'm just bidding my time until the affects hit me.

yeah flu killed people across the border who can't afford healthcare or food. Unless you're speaking of canada, in which case they were probably just pussies.

This is Europe 12f man. Everyone has healthcare. Even the poorest gypsies. Some people don't have the healthiest living conditions, and the hospitals themselves are rather poor... I think Slovakia is a step up from the Ukraine, though.

Swine Flu is more overhyped than global warming, and that's saying a lot. Yes, you should get sent home if you have it, to prevent the spread, but that's really no different from the normal flu. Yes, it's killing people, but again, so is the normal flu.

Swine Flu is really nothing special. Quite a few people at my work have gotten it and not one of them is dead. Not a big deal.

Thanks... you're only four years late

Swine flu is no more deadly than regular flu... I think it does deserve some of the hype though... around these parts schools are being shut down because of so many people having it. It seems a lot more widespread than normal flu ever has been.

Maybe that's because while you can get a flu shot, they still don't have shots available (at least here) for swine flu (unless you're pregnant, diabetic, rich, etc). So hardly anyone is imune, unlike normal flu where so many people are.

If you're really old you're probably immune. And so and so I didnt realize you were speaking of your slovakian borders.

I have swine flu right now. It's not cool. Basically, it feels like having the worst flu of your life at the same time as the worst cold of your life. It probably won't kill me, though, even though I have a depressed immune system from intestinal disease and I'm in the "high risk" age group. I'm fortunate that I can take a couple weeks off without serious backlash; otherwise, if I were trying to work, the added strain might complicate things.

The worst part is being too exhausted to even watch movies or play videogames. Right now I'm in a half-hour window before going back to sleep.

You're in the "high risk" age group? Really? Do you mean to contract the disease or have a bad reaction to it? I thought the elderly and the young were the high risk age groups.

For swine flu it's the opposite. The high risk group are the young ones with the strongest immune systems. It's not the flu itself that's deadly, but your body's reaction to it, that kills.

Zorax, get well soon man!

Im coming down with something now as well, aint that a laugh.

as I understand it the 'epedemic' is supposed to peak about now.

The real danger isn't deaths but rather social functions being crippled by people being home sick.

Of course if you have to stay home sick if you got it, otherwise it might be real dangerous.

Except for people with lung problems like asthma, they're in the risk group too because swine flu has high probability of coming with pneumonia.

Okay, well, that definitely wasn't cool, but I'm all better now except for a lingering cold. Stay healthy, everyone!

What took me by surprise was the length of the fever. I've never had a fever that lasted more than 24 hours before, but this one lasted five days! That was a little freaky, but it wasn't a high fever, so I'm okay.

My daughter had a fever for like 3-4 days... oddly it was gone for the 3rd day in the morning but then came back a few others into the day.

And her cough is still there, over a week after the fever went away. LAME!
