Now I was watching a documentary on Hugo Chávez. Now what ever you have to say about this man, be it good or bad I can tell you this. He really does know how to run a propaganda war doesn't he...

But to the discussion a head...
What do you think of him? Do you believe in his revolution? Or think he is just a dictator like the right-wing of the US claim? Do you think he believes in democratic change or do you think when the chips are down and they vote him out, or he can't run again he will just turn his revolution into a true dictatorship?

I can't make up my mind on Chávez. Please do try to back up your argument with some solid research and or links. I keep reading both sides and as of now I say this. At least he put the poor on the political table. At least now people have to acknowledge there is a problem.

I think you have to be a bit of a dictator if you ar going to run a south American country in a way benifitial to its people.

The U.S. is to good at displacing people.

Hugo Chavez's popularity steem from the benefice brought about by high oil revenue. Without it, he wouldnt have the money to implement the social programs underlying his "21 century socialism". Problem is, the people think that the relative socioeconomic success of Chavez's Venezuela are the product of his social programs, while in reality, Chavez has been ridding the wave of oil revenue.

this is the analysis supported by The Economist.

Something along the same line can be said about Russia's economic recovery under Putin.

Exepting that putin has done fuck-all as far as social programmes go.

Unless you count reempowering the former KGB.

He centralized the government even further, he began revamping the army, while standing up to te West in a context of general western over-engagement and schism between Europe and North America, all the while the economy was recovering because of high oil revenue.

He's good, and I like him as a character, but he did nothing really outstanding. Putin is a product of an era of valuable and expensive natural ressources and anti-western nationalist assertiveness. However, I wish he would have engaged the West in a more constructive manner, to compensate for Europe's weak diplomacy and America's arrogance.

I don't really see what is sensational about Hugo Chavez in terms of actual policies. He just has fiery anti-bush speeches. He shook hands with Obama after all.

Chavez is trying to present himself as an alternative to US leadership, by setting up alternative institutions with his oil money. He's trying to ciment some sort of hispanic solidarity. Good for him, except that things are only working so far because he's footing the bill with his own money. I've never read or heard anybody argue with credibility about any sort of serious hispanic solidarity, these countries are distrustful and jaleous of each others.

Well, I don't see why South American countries have to take on US leadership. They're independent sovereign nations with their own institutions, concerns and national borders.

Oh, I havent meant to say that they had to take on US leadership. Its just that the fact that Chavez wants to present himself as a viable and original alternartive to US leadership is a good reason to be interested in him.
