26, and i really ought to head out for some optical printing. what's that you ask? why, it's the guts of a projector and a beam of light pointed at a camera. i can then take three frames of the same image and make the motion look slowed down. i can also zoom in to a part of the film. mind you this is all analog, not digitally done. you can do this stuff digitally, but it's all too smooth and thus unrealistic. my method will have a direct tap with the "muses" as it were.

optical printers also have many applications for animation
I've been going over what alot of the film equipment at my school does to help negotiate space issues between warring faculty. It's actually really exciting - here you guys can read an open letter I made for everyone to come to a meeting, and tell me what you think! I'm really kind of proud over this.

Dear Friends and Faculty,

I would like to propose a number of things relating to our next meeting (Tuesday, 5PM), and Paul and Pam suggested I write them down in a letter first so that you all know where I stand, and have a chance to prepare for it. First of all I want to make clear that all my thoughts and opinions are my own, and I wont pretend to represent anyone other than myself. Second, I should explain my motivations for why I chose to get involved.
I was angry and worried when I heard that Steven wouldnt be coming back next year. I felt sympathy for him and my classmates who are also angry, and I think he was treated very unfairly. However, instead of simply protesting and (most likely) getting nothing accomplished, I decided to gather as much information on our department as possible, and see if there was anything positive that I could do. I feel guilty to Steven and my friends for not defending him as strongly as he deserves, but I hope everyone who reads this can see why I made this decision.
So, Ive met with a lot of the faculty. Ive spoken with Lourne. Ive asked many students their opinions. Ive seen all the rooms in our department, and itemized everything thats broken, and the main thing that Id like to say before proposing anything and I think we should all acknowledge this is that the status quo is pretty good. There are space issues, and some machines are broken on both sides, but things are ok we could teach for a year successfully. I think this should be kept in mind during any discussion of proposals, so that they never become heated. No ones in a desperate situation.
Now as for my proposals, I have two sets of goals for this department. The small one is to set an agenda on what to do over this summer to prepare for teaching next fall, and this can hopefully be decided in one meeting. The larger goal is for everyone in our department to work together in a calm and enjoyable environment and this will be much harder. Ill start with the smaller one.
I suggest that, for this meeting and from now on, department meetings should include all students who wish to attend. They should all be informed of meeting dates, and they should all have an equal voice in giving opinions and voting on decisions. Meetings should be divided in two parts. Part one would involve everyone briefly proposing topics for discussion, and new ideas for the department. No ideas should include practical considerations, or altering the present situation. For example, stating the desire to have a space for teaching lighting to film students shouldnt include where it would meet that would be saved for phase two.
After everyone has made proposals and a list has been made, those who have remained silent should choose which should be seriously discussed during the meeting so that everyone is assured participation. These would be decided based on which are most desirable, and necessary. Then each one would first be discussed by whoever suggested it as the positive point of view, and this explanation should include practical considerations such as money and space. Then it would be asked of the group if theres anyone present who is against the proposal, and he/she should be allowed to speak (all of this would be without interruptions). Then anyone else who wanted to speak would be able, and after, thered be a general vote.
Every important decision would be made along these lines. At the end of the meeting, these decisions would be written down as THE AGENDA and all faculty would stick to it until the next meeting and there ought to be at least two meetings a semester. This is the format Im suggesting. If you dont like it, then dont use it and, hopefully in the future well be calm enough not to need it. I just think we should try it once to see if it works. Even if we dont need it, itll certainly get us organized, and make things go faster.
To save some time on our next meeting, and so that you can form opinions, Im listing here in order of importance my biggest desires for the future of this department.

1. In the next 2-3 years Id like to see several computer animation classes, taught in our department including the hiring of one full time professor. Id like to see Computer Modeling 1&2, and Computer Animation 1&2, so that all interested students would be able to devote enough time in school to make a large project. It should be noted that this wont be taught next year.
2. In the next 2-3 years Id like to see the return of an Animation History course, and I think it should be considered as Academic in terms of credit.
3. I think the film section deserves a reserved space for studio work, in order to teach lighting, angles, and so many other things crucial to study.
4. All visiting artists should have access to Anderson Auditorium, so that the entire school will have the opportunity to hear them.
5. Id like to see a clear policy on how computers in the department are used so that they wont break so often. This should be made by a computer expert and drummed into the heads of all students. Ive come across a student simply pushing the power button to turn one off, because he didnt know where to click on Shut Down. Proper use of computers is simply part of the educational process.
6. The projector in the animation department should be replaced as soon as possible. It overheats, interfering with film and video viewings, and its got to be a fire hazard.
7. I would like to see a video library owned by the school, with works chosen specifically for a role in teaching, that students would also have access to. Every year a small portion of the budget could go to adding to this library, with works suggested by teachers.
8. Its been suggested that some sort of digital or still camera be bought to attach to the Oxberry machine, to add to its usefulness. I think its an exciting idea, but needs careful consideration as to which kind of camera would be best, as theyre so expensive. Someone suggested a 3 Chip, while another mentioned a Nikon D1. I have no idea what any of this means but it should be discussed further.
9. Although I havent seen a strong need for additional storage space among any of the faculty, it would be nice, and probably wouldnt be that hard to arrange.

Please consider these, and come up with your own proposals, in the manner outlined above, and hopefully well have a productive meeting. Also, its been suggested that we have a potluck dinner after, and I think we should just make this official everyone bring something to eat. Ill bring a cake and some soda, so it should be good. J
As for my larger goal I almost dont want to go into this, but honestly weve lost two animation faculty in the last two years (three counting Larry), and in order to ensure a more stable and friendly atmosphere for next year, I think our department needs to address certain issues. Of course Im no saint, and I dont want anyone thinking that I consider myself above you or anything like that. Ive had my fair share of arguments and bad relations. Its just that some people had attitudes and grudges during the last meeting that will obviously never lead to changing things. I wont go into them specifically here, because I dont think thatd be fair to specific people, but in general my proposals include four main points.

1. Dont Argue Over The Past
2. Treat Everyone As Equals
3. Set A Clear Agenda And Stick To It
4. Keep Students Involved

If you cant keep to these main points, then I personally dont see how we can ever work together. Thank you for reading this, and I hope to see you all at the meeting.

Yours Truly,
Art

i don't think you can attach a digital or still camera to an oxberry, but a 3 chip is a good digital. might i suggest a 24p? then again, flim still looks the best, and if you have an oxberry, you should not shameface it by slapping a digital camera on there.

as for my optical printing... bohr, i got off to a later start than i thought i would, and then when i did start, i clearly was not focused. plus i kept messing up on my timing, and that's something of a down putter. but i am going in today with some anewed vim and vigor, and hopefully i can lay the smack down on that bizzity-bizatch. too bad the room's so damn hot...

well, off i go! it's rather kinda' neat, it look like paramecium under a microscope. you guys have a good day, 25 and counting.

the thing is film's so expensive, and so few students can put together a project to be ready for the oxberry. the teachers think that by adding this new feature, kids could learn to use it without spending so much.

meh, i guess that works. and yes, film is indeed expensive...

so, day 23 to go, i missed a day... *sigh* agh, more optical printing was had by me. it takes for damn near ever. i think i will polish this film off on the contact printer, for at least that will fly through... the thing is, i have to learn that stuff as well...

but yes, soon, soon i will be done with this foul film-making. soon i will be able to waste my life and time with games like war3. soon i will be able to start pumping out drawings to send to kid's magazines... ah... curse school!!! well, at least the black maria film festival is tonight.

lol tomorrow's meeting will be interesting. I just got word that our only remaining animation teacher was moved to the drawing department. So that leaves us with exactly zero representation. great. well so much for trying to work together.

You have war3 maps? Cool! I've not played many maps made by people at the forum, and the only ones I liked were mine, which never get finished. But I have a 1v1 3rd-person 10-level map which looks cool, if not much else. And I'm going to finish it! I'm halfway done!

yeah, the tail end of day 22! and a week until earth day! yipee!

yes gaggin, i have been working on some maps... they probably won't be ready at the fron of summer, and i will probably ask for some play testing, so that they can be refined, and tested for errors. hopefully the artists will help...

as for the optical printing, yeah, it's done, for now. tomorrow i will somehow have to find the time to mail this stuff out. i'm not sure when that will happen though...

Well the meeting was canceled - 5 minutes after it was supposed to begin!!!! And I had managed to get the Dean of Faculty AND the Provost of the School to sit in on it. Abby Childs - the head of film&animation just said, no, I want it next week when all my students can join in. She even tried to make it sound like it was supposed to be next week - it was very frustrating. So we're having it next week, and it's unknown whether the Dean and Provost will make it. But, at least I think I got Abby scared for the first time, over this. So that's something. And, I've been reading letters left and right. I've gotten the dean of the school involved, I wrote one to the director of the Museum right next to us. Pretty soon I'll be writing a letter to the Board of Governors. All in all I'm making quite a stink

so yeah, day 21 will be a long one. work, journal entries, lack of sleep, whoopie! all the more reason i can't wait until summer. the last summer i may ever have.

Last summer? Are you planning to die soon, or move a country that only has wet and dry seasons?

Your av is green as usual .

Anyways, from what I've heard, CAMBRIDGE university is EASIER than the highschool program I'm doing right now . I heard this from several students who used to do work at the school I go to and then went to cambridge....I for one hope that's true.

What kind of class programs you taking at high school GRUNT? Here where I live we can take IB courses, which are pretty much like college work 4 years early, but Cambridge is kinda... prestigious, isn't it?

I'm also taking full IB . My higher subjects are: Art, History, and English.

Other subjects include
PE (ugh)
Math Methods
Standard Biology
TOK
Hmmmm, I'm sure there's more, but I don't want to think about that right now

yes, green indeed. it was interesting figuring out how to recolor a specific part of the image. for instance, viewtiful joe is red. making him green he is viewtiful jov!

have any of you heard about that game? apparently it harks back to the days of traditional side scrolling fighters, like double dragon. it sure has me curious. plus it's done in a comic book style, seriously, it looks like a comic book...

i never took IB courses in high school. first off, my high school did not offer them. secondly, college is not really that hard, in fact it's easier as you don't have homework. well, you have readings...

today, number 19 to go, was a nice do nothing day, aside from a class. i played some midnight soccer with some friends last night, and right when one of them sprained his ankle, it started to rain. the timing was impecibale.

i will have a busy weekend. my 'rents are coming up to visit and have lunch for "easter." a holiday i don't really care too much about... then it's work, work, work, both job and flim work. as a matter of fact, i will probably have to get some stuff done, just so those days will be now more efficient... ugh. not too mention that i have to clean up this house.

can i say that most often roommates suck.

we have this trade off every night for doing the dishes. you are permitted to miss a day or two if you have papers, projects, exams, or general laziness... of course, you have to do all the dishes up until that point. so you have every dish from the previous night to do as well. it's not something you really want to do. in any case, one of my roommates, ben, typically forgets to do the dishes. in doing so, he further puts them off, because the load becomes immense. no one wants to take on five loads of dishes (we don't have a dishwasher) in a night, let alone ten if you put it off a week. so ben does like two, and stops. he still has the rest to do. he seems to stretch this out for over a week. i really wish we could impose a true restriction on shit like that... basically, our house gets disgusting.

1.after college the summer never stops, even if you work
2.you can always find a new apartment with a dish washer

Also, you may find yourself back in school quicker than you'd think.

I'm in the same boat - i have like 4 people to model and then a whole dancing scene in a bar to animate on Lightwave. At least I'm almost finished with the bar - and I finally got a tuxedo on my skeleton.
LOL i still don't even have a sky yet Then there's a zillion trees to model nor a moon. argh....

goddamn, you are telling me. i just sent my film off to forde labs in seattle... that's a relief. of course, it had better come back on friday, so that i can show it in class... or at least deal with it.

but i still have loads more to do for my animation class. i have yet to make any of the "puppets" or backgrounds. i am thinking this'll be more and more a story with just one scene... although i really want to have more... bah, nothing like a last minute project...

What's your animation about? I'm making a computer animation on an Aquabats song - from the CD you picked out! It's "Fantasma Del Mar". You can render single frames, and when I can figure out how to save them, I'll paste some here. It involves a skeleton who awakens from his grave on a full moon, and decides to go to a bar and pick up chicks. It's pretty funny.

well, my animation is about some of aesop's fables. these will focus on the fox doing various things. i am pretty sure the fox and the raven will be in there. i hope i can add the fox and the grapes. and i would not mind adding others, but i have less than two miraculous weeks to pull this all out of my ass.

and the worst part is, trey parker and matt stone wish to see copies of this class's stuff. that's right, the gentel's of south park fame. they both went to CU, specifically the film department, and my instructor layed it out that she's gonna' send a tape to them, as per request.

so i might as well make it look as good as i can... never hurts to have a friend in the business...

If you ever get on good terms with those guys, maybe you can show them my stuff sometime )))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))

An animation job would so kick ass right now!!!

well, i am tempted to use film because, well, it's film. but i am running out of time to have it be film, so i think i am going with shideo. it'll probably end up on mini dv...

it looks like it'll be in black and white, as in white paper, black inked lines. the color i planned on using shows up too dark on the paper stock i am using.

the motion will be done with articulate puppetry, think indonesian shadow puppets sans the shadow and wires. the puppets will be made with paper, and will only "move" in the animation itself.

sorry so and so, the last couple of nights i have been working in the basement of macky... i did get some film back today. perhaps this summer i can convert it to a digital medium, and then find some place to upload it. it sweet in stills, it even sweeter in motion...

but alas, i am afraid that my updates will be less and less frequent. i have a lot to do, and all of that topped with work, exams, and a paper... and my interenet times suffers. my sleep does too...

i will try to update, but for now i have to make some puppets for my animation. when they have been used i will scan them for you all...
