So, i just bought all these great comedy DVD's and I want to show some good christmas scenes for my students this week. That way I don't have to bring/lose/scratch all the CD's, nor would i have to wait for each DVD to upload/ go through title screens and such. So, how do I copy and convert these suckers?

It's a multistep, complex process.

I think it's legal for educational purposes under fair use in the US.

But you need DVD Decrypter or a similar dvd ripping software, available:

http://www.dvddecrypter.org.uk/

Once you've ripped the files to your computer, there are two options:

1) The easy way. Use Dr. Divx ( http://labs.divx.com/DrDivX ) to convert to Divx. Then process further as necessary.

2) The proper way. Extract the mpeg stream with DGmpgDec:

http://neuron2.net/dgmpgdec/dgmpgdec.html

Open the vob files with DGmpgDec. Make sure it will demuxes the audio (there's a menu you may have to check). Save the project. Get a D2V file. Convert to avi with VFAPI reader codec: http://www.divx-digest.com/software/vfapi.html

Last, recode the video and audio to avi and compress. To compress, you need some codec installed. Xvid may still be the best ( http://www.xvid.org/ ) Divx is the best known ( http://www.divx.com/ ). With one of those installed, go over and get VirtualDub ( http://www.virtualdub.org/ ). Then you can open the avi file, set your compression and other preferences, browse through it, choose the clips you want to include... get the demuxed audio file, under audio streams, add it to the file, convert it if you want (mp3 seems to work better than ac3 usually). And save it.

If you want to make one video with clips from multiple dvds, VirtualDub can merge and split videos however you want. There's an "Append video clip" menu option. You could also use it on videos made with Dr. Divx that should be able to take the audio and video directly from the vob file without an intermediary.

Good luck,

Thorn

okay, first question. I went here: http://neuron2.net/dgmpgdec/dgmpgdec.html

and I want to know, just what should I be downloading? Which version and how many parts?

..... alright I downloaded the latest version, loaded a "vob" file and saved it as a D2V. When I did, I got this message:

"A field order transition was detected
It is not possible to decide automatically if this should be corrected.
Refer to the DGIndex Users for an explanation.
You can choose to correct it by hitting the Yes button below or you can correct it later using the Fix D2V tool."

Can anyone tell me if I should say yes and correct it?

Here's another question. I save these as "demuxed" movie clips and then select as a .d2v file, and it saves as two seperate files on my hard drive. Do both matter, and what the hell's happening?

Okay, I tried downloading that first codec - VFAPICodecV10 - to convert my d2v file. It won't load. I checked the read me. It says to work, I first need to run the .bat file. So I clicked on that to run it and it says it can't find some vifp.inf file, so it won't launch. That vifp file is sitting in the same download folder right next to it, so I don't know why it's not working.

Edit: I also tried downloading that Dr.Divx program. Here's the message I got when I tried to install it:

"your operating system is not supported by Dr. DivX 2.0 OSS. Continuing this installation may damage your computer.

Continue anyway?"

Naturally, I said no. Then I got this message,

"This program might not have installed correctly

If this program didn't install correctly, try reinstalling using settings that are compatable with this version of windows.

reinstall using recommended settings?
this program installed correctly?

or cancel"

I hit cancel.
