Let me tell you about the forest drop.
First, you need a zeppelin and a siege weapon(catapult, ballista, mortar, meat wagon), then use ur siege weapon to make a hole(one shot needed) in the middle of a forest area and finally drop ur siege weapon in this forest hole. Now, guess what, ur siege weapon cannot be reached by opponent melee, nor by opponent ranged if u place right (u have 100 range while they have 45 unupgraded, at most 65 upgraded). So ur opponent will need either his own siege weapons or some air to ground units to get you take back ur siege weapons in ur zeppelin.
Strategic uses ? Well, u can prevent an opponent to mine if u find a safe hole at 100 or less range of his peon line (NE excepted) or pound some of his key buildings. U can also use it defensively, getting an unreachable siege weapon in a key position of ur own base (provided he still haven't his own siege weapons).
Cons ? It is hard to pull it up at the no upkeep stage as it cost u 5/6 food and high level creeps to defeat early on. So, it is better suited during the low upkeep stage. It take quite a lot of micro time, but will force ur opponent to spend as much micro time if he wants to get rid of the annoyance. It hasn't devastating effect, compare it to the 1 dragoon range drop on cliff u can pull on LT, the goal is to annoy ur opponent without weakening to much (5/6 supply) ur main force. I think it is only worth it if u have a better micro than ur opponent, thus u can still micro correctly ur main army and base while draining some micro time of ur opponent.
Advantage? The risks of ur zeppelin and siege weapon getting caught while in the forest are very low even if u are microing elsewhere in the same time.
NB : even if opponent gets his siege weapons u can still abuse them starcraft 1.03 reaver style with ur zeppelin, by unloading, firing, then loading before getting hit by opponent siege weapons shots.

Conclusion : all slayer-boxers wannabes, this strat is for u. If u have already hard time to micro correctly all the fights and ur base, don't use this strat.

PS : For the reasons mentioned above, I don't use this strat

If they have any air units though, it would be very easy to take out.

As a slight variation, you could blast holes in the trees, then drop a builder unit, and put some buildings in there... then they would be protected from most land units and you would just have to worry about air. Not sure how this would work, but it's possible.

It's a good tactic if your opponent goes all ground.

Say you blast a holea good distance (but within range) of the enemy mineral line (or gold, lumber, whatever). Drop a couple mortar teams in the hole, so they can hit his base and hopefully halt his economy. Then, he'll have two options in getting rid of it: send his own siege units or send air units. Your mortar teams can be shooting at his siege weapons, and at the very least should be able to win cost for cost, as they'll be firing defensively. This in itself is worth it. As for air units, you can have your mortar teams protected by gyrocopters, which also should be able to beat cost for cost any air unit that can hit ground.

Thus, you have yourself a little base that your opponent has no choice but to attack, and a battle set up that even if you lose you're basically guaranteed to come out ahead costwise. Add onto that the fact that while all this is going on you're mining and he isn't, and you've got yourself a devilish little strat. Nice job.

That would be a hell of alot more trouble than it's worth.

I don't think so. It's no more trouble than turbo-newbie in SC (which was basically the same idea) and that was DEFINITELY worth the effort.

For those who don't know:

turbo-newbie: Bringing a dropship with 1 or more siege tanks in it to a cliff over the enemy peon line. Sometimes marines would be brought for anti-air/tank protection, and sometimes an scv would build a missle turret for anti-air/detection. It's cheap, requires little time/micro, can be done early on, and often devastates the enemy economy, which in starcraft meant everything. It's called turbo newbie because even a newbie can pull it off and its annoying as hell to counter. This is basically the same idea.
