I'm thinking about moving to Europe, so hopefully he won't have to drive to drink. Most European towns are so old, they're set up for walking. So, just like when I'm in Slovakia, we can walk to a bar, get drunk, and walk home. Plus, since any 16 year old can drink at a bar in Slovakia, it's just not a big deal. Kids think it's normal and they get over it.

I'm American. I'm basically a mutt. Part English, Scottish, French, Italian. The works. I'm actually a distant relation to Charles Dickens.

One thing I will try to teach my son is that drinking isn't important, and it can become addictive. Iva's family drinks, but I wouldn't say they're addicts. They're not screwing up their lives or anything over alcohol.

You don't have to move to Europe for that, you can move the Fan in Richmond. Here I can walk to dozens of bars no problem. If anything, move him to Europe for the women.

The women and the educational opportunities. There you can learn another language, travel three hours and go where they speak it. Here, the only other spoken language is Spanish. Granted it's important, but I don't see where we could really use it except if our son went into health services or some such.

Move to China or Japan, that is where the important languages are along with the future.

Especially China, godamn. I predict it will overtake English as the business language in the majority of the world.

Well i just been going through a bit of the thread, skimming through it and i notice one thing. Teach him some math Now, i might be the only computer engineer on this forum... but you should start early. School, and i imagine even more so in USA, is bawlz. He's not going to learn how to do multiplication, adding, etc at a rate faster than turtle unless YOU teach it to him. You don't have to be amazing at mathematics, by the time he gets to high school and starts learning algebra, calculus etc, he should be able to pick it up himself (or not, if hes not capable...) but the point is that you build the foundation for every possibility.

You teach him languages, arts, literature etc, but you're missing out on the other stuff. Just like its impossible to learn languages once you're older, if they dont have an early math foundation, they'll just flounder. Why else are Canadian universities now devoid of white people?

I would like to disagree, not because I don't think math is important, but because I don't think it is more important than, like you mentioned, languages, arts, etc. It all depends on what the kid will want to do when he's older, so you really can't say one thing or another will be more useful to him.

My dad tried to cram math into my head from a very early age, because he is a very math-oriented person and in general, the Russian school system has always favored sciences over arts. However, it just made me dislike it that much more, and never really instilled in me an appreciation or aptitude for it.

What I'd like to know, Ultra, is which math is most important? Which functions & equations do you find you use on a regular basis in your work? If you could find me a practical use for each equation that's job related, or benefits life in general, hell, we could write a book and get rich!

At least part of Ultra's math is more or less specific for computer engineering, I'd say. Something every scientist, engineer etc will have to deal with though is calculus, but it'll probably be enough if the boy has a basic understanding of roots, powers and functions, starting of course with adding, substracting, dividing and multiplying.

But, is the school system that bad that them kiddies don't get taught such things well?

So and So

Equations and stuff are high school, by then (imo) your child should be learning on his own (or if hes not, look at him with disappointment ). All you're teaching him is the very basics, adding, subtracting, multiplication, division... mostly integer stuff at first, bring in positive/negative, bring in decimals/fractions later and then slowly teach him less and less and instead encourage him to study on his own.

What is useful later in life all depends on what he does, average person only does simple arithmetic. I have to deal with calculus, combinatorics and some algebra in my line of work. Picture if you want how to figure out whether an email is spam. You calculate something using a very simple Bayes equation, get a number, use the probability you calculated on each word and put them together using a posterier probability equation and then you bias the answer and put it to a threshold to get an answer. Not terribly difficult but without knowing any math, there's no way i can understand any of it.

First off there's no "best" math. So i'll tell you what i have found each to be useful for. Math is delineated into three categories...

Calculus -> functions, graphing
Finite -> combinatorics (probability theory), statistics etc
Geometry -> obviously deals with shapes, trigonometry, algebra

Most of this high level stuff is not useful to the average person, so if you want to teach him it, its up to you. I was just saying the basics (arithmetic) is necessary because if he doesnt understand any of it at an early age, chances are he'll just pass it up.

Calculus is used to figure out circuits work, buildings stand up... lots of engineering stuff. Future line of work -> engineers (a hell of a lot), doctors, nurses (just the basics), most science (somewhat less than engineering) related stuff (chemistry, biology, physics)

Finite math is useful for accountants, staticians. Future line of work -> mostly math related business stuff, accountants, staticians, insurance (acturial science)

Algebra is useful for geniuses, only easier levels of algebra are used by the rest of us. Future line of work -> engineer (need some), physics (their questions are always some abomination of super tough calculus and algebra at the same time), pure math, any of the super cool really out there stuff (for instance NASA), programming (computer science, software engineering)

Silencer

No no, i think you misunderstood what i said. He didnt have a single mention of math in his teaching plan, so then theres no math whatsoever. I learned a bunch of stuff when i was younger and actually i learned math first (and then stopped) before learning about high level literature and the like.

EDIT: North American school system is bawlz! Don't trust it. When it comes to math and science you'll get about a 20% hit rate on getting a good teacher. Especially in elementary school, the hit rate drops even further because they don't even need to have done math in their life before teaching it to students.

Also yeah a lot of my math i learn is geared towards computer engineering but the basic concepts are the same which can be applied to other fields. I may be learning Laplace transforms to solve a differential equation for a circuit, but the same Laplace could be used for mechanical engineers in solving beams, or civil guys solving bridge equations... etc

Because they're not devoid of white people as much as they're actualy open to international appliquants?

He'll learn math. I might get some arithmatic books at an early age for him to do. We'll see how his development goes. Some kids just aren't ready for it till a certain age. But I'll try early. I especially want to get him reading and learning foreign languages really early - like 3. Obviously he won't be quoting shakespeare, but he could know the alphabet and write some simple words based on phonetics.

that's just cuz we have money. As for a good education, you don't need to go to Uni to get it, you need to read. the more you read, the more you know, plain and simple. Staying in university is really just for getting a stamp of approval.

I'm not entirely convinced my son needs to go to uni, unless it can help start a real career. My 4 years at college were a waste career wise, except it was enough to get me into an art ed grad program. Meh.

I should've gone to art school.

Yeah, but that's higher education. It's true, American universities are the best in the world, by and large, but primary school through high school in the U.S. is not rated very highly at all, internationally.

True, American public schools are ranked somewhere around 18th in the world.

So here's an update on the whole Euro thingy. I just signed up with an employment agency in the UK. If they can find me a teaching job, they'll get me a work permit for 4 years, that's renewable. I'd be a US citizen working in the UK, and teaching art, anywhere in the country. Should be kick ass! Maybe we can find Hogwarts while we're over there.

Or hang out with some forumers. Where the hell did angry ogre go off to?

True, but SoandSo will only have to worry about that if his kid's a complete moron. If he's a smart lad, he'll do well regardless.

You know, I remember a time, vaguely, when Majin here was actually funny. Makes me wonder if someone else hasn't stolen his account, cuz I don't recognize this guy at all, now.

Majin dude, whoever you are, why all the bitterness?

It's ups and downs. Not that he's not retarded, he's always been retarded, but sometimes it is a very funny retardation, sometimes not =(

Because they're not devoid of white people as much as they're actualy open to international appliquants?

Not really, there isnt a single international student in my class, or any other engineering class (There might be 1 exchange student per class). Most other things like doctor or lawyer only open maybe 2 or 3 slots for international students per 100 seats. You know this, stop making shit up b~e When im talking devoid of white people, canada is 85% white and engineering is 5% white. You tell me how many of the non-whites are "international" applicants? Cuz its next to none.

The point is that its up to you to make your kid smart at the early grades of elementary school. High school will be where your kid is either smart or not, works hard or not etc... if you still guide their hand then it will be difficult for them in university/college.

I sorta forget what age i started getting math training but it was a lot of work (also for my parents if i think back on it). Anyway, this is typically why parents of certian professions have their children more geared towards certain professions. What you feel like and are more comfortable teaching them is based on what you know.

Oh yeah, and learning chinese is slow and monotonous. If you're planning on learning it, get ready for like super hard work for your kid There's a high level of rote memorization, a lot of repetition writing and memorizing whole famous chinese literary works and reciting it in front of a teacher. That's if you want to teach it standard chinese style :p

Chinese is a difficult language to learn, but it may be worth the effort, especially with his generation. China will rule the world, and perhaps annex Canada for some strange reason! Be prepared Ultra!

Just remember that if you want to try and interest him in things, don't force it, suggest it. And just be around, but not so much that he won't feel like you're controlling.

That, and hang him upside down in a dark basement for a day if he misbehaves.

Yeah, I see what you're saying. The best way to control what he does is not let him know there's alternatives. Keep him away from a tv so he doesn't fall in love with some show. I used to get pissed when I had to miss transformers for a violin lesson. Dad wouldn't find any other time to do it.

But now that I'm grown up, I don't really watch transformers, but I do play violin, and I recognize that, and I'm thankful to my dad. So depending on the situation it's ok.

I'm up in the air about Chinese. It'd be very difficult to learn, and it's such a scary place, I don't know if my son would want to visit it. Now Japanese might be good to learn.

I guess if I ever want him to go into politics and save the world, he'd need to learn Chinese and Russian. But, just for getting ahead in Business, I think it's the Euro languages that matter - that and maybe Japanese.

Europe's basically becoming the wealthiest continent again, kicking our American asses. Just 5 years ago, 9 of the 10 wealthiest people on earth were American. Now we only have 3 and Europe has like 6. Just as one example.

Just because they are combining their economies.

Just be ready for the rise of the East. A Sino-Japanese alliance would spell the downfall for the west.

How cool would that be though? If China and Japan team up they can use their technological skills to build Transformers and have them piloted by an army of teenagers gifted with morphing coins that grant them magical suits and amazing karate skills and the ability to summon mini-transformers...

Being invaded by my childhood heroes would be awesome

Yeah, till the Japs turn your mom into a "comfort woman".

All in all it's a good thing those two countries hate each other. I mean, it's not, but you know.

Any language outside english is useful really but to say which one is going to be useful in the future depends on what kind of wars come around in the next 20-30 years.

When a kid is young, you can tell them to do whatever and they'll do it. Rebelling doesnt occur until high school where you shouldnt be telling them what to do in terms of studying anyways, you should be providing them stuff to learn with and they do it in their own time. If you have to poke and prod them to study by the time of high school thats not a good sign.

I think a China-India alliance could be potentially more devastating as a third of the world's population crushes you underneath its many jackboots.

Its really interesting to see with whom you identify, ultrapunk, despit being born here. Is it all because that one kid called you a chinese-canadian in highschool?

I'm as shocked by him as you are, folks.

You're the one that talks about surrendering to the first person that attacks our country
