shooting someone(or, in this case, quite likely something) that is all up in your grill screaming and flailing away with claws/psiblades/god knows what else at point blank range with a rifle is really, really hard. swiping back with the rifle is much easier. putting a blade on the rifle makes it that much more effective.

Well, use of bayonets is rare in modern warfare, so the surprising thing is that every marine is fitted with one. What use would a bayonet be against enemies with heavy armour and carapaces? Sure they are better in close combat but in close combat you are dead against a Zergling.

My point exactly, a marine at close quaters is a dead marine!

As for the shield, The Gaussrifles are two handed if you care about aiming, it isnt shield compatable!

If they are gonna have shields they would have to have a pistol-like thingie, wich just is Not cool!

I haven't seen anybody use a bayonet for decades in modern warfare... what's a bayonet do against a zergling? I just find it strange that they can hold this giant ass shield and use their machinegun at the same time. Unless of course they've switched to warhammer style bolters

Maybe Marines now have a melee mode to replace the missing firebats. Maybe they use the sheild and bayonets and whomp on zerglings all day long.

What if they're not "holding" the shields? What if it's just attached to their arm? That would leave their hand free to hold the gun, though it would make it a tad awkward.

Marines already womp lings all day long. If anything, they'd die faster if they switched to using their bayonets because they're outnumbered, have low hp, low armor, and there's no way they can strike anywhere near as fast as the lings with bayonets. Zealots own lings because they have high hp, high armor(I think, for infantry), a decent attack rate, and good attack power. The bayonets are probably only there for style.

The animations of the units in the gameplay video seem to not be affected by the presence of a shield and bayonet. They move, shoot and die like usual, expcept with a shield attached to their arm.

Most soldiers will tell you, an order to fit bayonets means you're fucked.

Hehe, maybe marines will lock their shields together to form a phalanx against a horde of zerglings... actually that could be a pretty neat idea, except way unrealistic with those small shields and bayonets.

The shields seem fine enough to me though.
