Wow, Manson was a simpleminded child.

Hmm, I don't think he is. I think he's had to deal with some real reflection. He's realized he's a fool, that these interviews are popular and silly and that they've become something of a pop culture icon. So he plays a clown on camera and sticks steadfast to his story. The moment he changes it he loses all poetic license. So he knows what he can say and what he can't say. For one, he hangs on the fact that he didn't actually stab anyone. He just clings on to that. But he also says he didn't literally say "go kill people". There's probably truth in that, which is what makes him sound so crazy. He knows it, and he plays off of it.
I think he's a pretty clear indication of how someone could turn out in a life jail sentence. The guy did a lot of drugs and is stuck in the 60's. He thinks and speaks in lyrical metaphors and cliches from his time. He likes Jail. Whether he's crazy or not I'm not sure, but he made a concious decision to start talking like a crazy person. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lFFJ...feature=related He speaks like a completely insane person here, but I don't believe that he believes what he's saying there. That's the best interview I've seen, and Manson even gets embarrassed when they bring out a boom box and play some of his music for him.
He has a few ideas which he believes in that may sound like crazy talk to people but he truly believes them and they have a poetic logic to them that others believe him as well. For instance, "where you go you're always here. You can't go anywhere." His concept of time and space is a little on the warped side but that's fair given his Time and Space. As Charlie Manson he will never escape his life. Even if he got out of jail he could never escape his reputation and the hatred people have for him. His time and space travel with him wherever he goes. So he must stay stationary in his cell until his time is up.
He thinks of himself as a poet and reacts to reporters like poets do. These interviews remind me of some of the angry, drug addled interviews with Bob Dylan. These people are asked "can you say who you are in a sentence?" Of course they can't because if poets are defined by what they say and the ideas that they have that have been put down as logically and concisely as possible into the form of poetry how can they break that down any further?
The word "poet" has positive connotations, but all I mean is the guy speaks in metaphors and symbols. In the sixties speaking in vague metaphors and symbols was flower power, it's all about peace and love man, but the cold truth of it is that the guy was a lousy musician and enjoyed the life of a bum.
So ultimately the answer is Charlie Manson is a bum. He enjoys prison life and he surely enjoys the letters he gets. Why should he leave prison when he gets to have these conversations with people? Those letters are praise for his work manipulating words and thought. I think he's content with that.
I think Charlie Manson is an act, and he gets paid for it in letters at his jail cell. What else is he going to live for?
-----------
at the end of that interview I linked, Charlie Manson when asked what would he say at his parole meeting he says, "I think I'm going to run for president." That's a joke for no one but the reporter and the audience back at home, he won't say that at a parole meeting and he knows that parole is not an option. But, he also talks about his kids. When asked about his kids he says "I don't talk about my kids." His words of advice are do things your own way, be your own self. Just for a second there you see he's got shame and he knows that he's probably screwed up his kids.

Well, tbh, I just tuned out after he said the whole, "I could kill you now like I was making a sandwich. I don't care" thing.
In my mind, that's something a thuggish child says to try and impress people. There's nothing impressive about it, so I just tune out to all the other garbage. Regardless of what his agenda was, I just don't see any valid reason to spew garbage.
