All I know for sure about where they live is: It's five miles down the road from where it used to be.

duuude! it's gotten very, very cold there. Homer was "plow king" for awhile, and once the church was frozen shut. anyway, the climate makes no sense at all. plus, it's legal to dynamite fish there. the only real conclusion we can draw is that springfield is not a real town.

imagine if there was city in america which was 2-d and all the people had yellow skin like the simpsons and there was a family which was exactly like the simpsons family and Springfield's rival is another 2-d city called shelbyville.. that would be pretty screwed-up huh?

Yeah, it's a bit hard to take a bus from Arizona to New York (let alone having Barney drive your car all the way to New York from Arizona ) And that's just one episode hehe..
Also, is there a Shelbyville in Arizona?
Honestly, I don't think Springfield is in ANY town. It's just in a fictional part of the US that we will never know..

I HAVE PROOF!
theres an ocen, mountains, a desert, and alot of other sheet.
but hte key piece of the puxxle is OGDENVILLE! in the episode with the monorail the salesman hold up a map where he has panciled on the town of ogdenvile. it is in arizona. as we know shelbyville is not the only town in the simpson world, ogdenville is in the same state cuz they have travled to the ogden ville mall b4. its aways off but still only a one day drive from the simpsons home and thats that

Springfeild, Illinois is a moderatly sized town of 70,000 poeple. there is a shelbyville about 10 miles east in, gofigure, shelby county. a town named Ogdenville is 35 miles southwest of Springfield.
A river flows through the town (Illinois river) with a large riverfront. prominent mountainous hills are present to the southeast and the river levee forms a gorge along its route to the southeast towards the mighty mississippi.
need i say more? really

yeah, well, is there a big flaming pile of tires in arizona? there is no town that's a perfect match (there was a 1000000 tire pile that caught fire in Illinoise, i think ) anyway, there also has to be a museum in it, and really there should be a krusty the clown etc. there is NO town that quite meets all the requirements.

probly in or around chicago, shit happens to catch fire or blow up or be massively vandalized in some way. hehe.
ok if u want to find the actual town springfield is it would need the following characteristics:
(all characteristics with an '*' are ones that fit with illy)
nuclear power plant
nearby gorge *
neighboring town of shelbyville *
by a river *
by an ocean
by huge mountains (IE the murderhorn, mt springfeild)
needs skyscrapers (remember whne hoemr tries to commit suicide?)
observary
museums
krusty
oil drilling operations
3-eyed-fish *..im sure around chicago we got some
international airport
huge arenas and stadiums
monorail*
next to a national forest
speedway
close to a large city called capital city (not real, heh, WOW, THE WINDY APPLE!)
beaches
heatwaves
snowstorms
tornadoes
hurricanes
earthquakes
it dosent make sence! there is no one spotthat fits
matt greoneg(sp) called it springfeild, cuz there is one in every state, and therefor fans felt as if they were talking about their own springfeild!
MAY I ADD, when they were trying to teach Apu American history so he can take a citizenship test, homor was pointing out where springfeild was on the USA map....and pointed to Chicago
